CURRENT FISHING REPORT
Date: Tuesday, May 25, 2010 at 19:17:29
Current Report: Delta/Sacramento We're trolling in the delta for the striper bass using shallow lures and deep diving lures. The Rio Vista to the Walnut Grove area seems to be the most productive. The tops and the bottoms of the tides works the best. Bombers and Rebels are good choices to start with. In the Sacramento area, we're using sardines and anchovies if we're anchored up, to catch our striped bass. The best area to fish is between Garcia Bend and the mouth of the Feather River. We're getting fresh fish and down streamers. For a bonus, we can also fish for shad which are by far, toughest fighting fish, pound for pound! They are easy to catch for the youngster as well as anyone else on the boat. Lakes Berryessa and Pardee are the best in the area. Berryessa is producing Lake King Salmon, Kokanee and trout. We're using Uncle Larry's spinners in UV green, red and blue for the Kokanee. Also, Uncle Larry's Ball Trolls in gold and silver are a must to be successfull in the lake for the lake kings. The depths are 15 to 35 feet for Kokanee's and 30 to 85 feet for the King Salmon. The trout are at a depth of from the surface to 25 feet. We're rolling shad for the kings and using Hoochies. Keep a tight line! Captain Rene'

Current Report: march 24,2010 Delta/Sacramento
The spring run of striped bass have arrived in force. From schoolies to big fish that are capable of straightening out a rebel lure treble hook. We are trolling from Collinsville all the way up to Clarksberg flats. You want to work your diving plugs close to the shore line and out to 22 feet of water. You should look for drop offs and ledges to locate the schools. The fish are migrating to their spawning waters. You may see them one day at one place and then gone the next day, so you'll have to look for them. Other places you might look are the sloughs near Decker Island, Sherman Lake, Walnut Grove and Courtland. Bait fishing has been very good on the outgoing tide. We're using shad, sardines, anchovies, pile worms and jumbo minnows on 3/O to 6/O Gamakatsu hooks. The sturgeon bite has improved but you will still have to put your time in. Use all the shrimp baits... eel will work too.

Current Report: Delta The winter striper bite is "on". It's going to take a full day to locate the striper schools, but once you find them it's well worth the effort! The action will be fast and furious for an hour or two then it's over. So carefully check the well known trolling areas like the west bank, Rio Vista Bridge area and the deep water channels to name a few.. use the deep diving lures in flame orange, chartreuse, rainbow and green with red on the top. Check out the Collinsville area to the PG&E plant for bait fishing where you will want to use shad, ghost shrimp, grass shrimp and eel. Lake Fishing We're suface trolling for trout at Berryessa, Amador and Comanche Lakes. We use Uncle Larry Spinners and Shasta Tackle lures in bright colors as well as the Rapela. For bait fishing, we use night crawlers and power bait or find a good spot to fish from the bank, it's a lot of fun!

Current Report: Sacramento River Salmon Alert! Salmon Alert! The salmon season has started and we've already hooked a fresh 25 lb chrome hen! She contained some beautiful tight row (meaning the run has just started). We are trolling Uncle Larry's spinners in pink pearl, orange & chartreuse and chartreuse & blue. The blades we selected in the early morning were brass or gold. When the sun was shining brightly silver blades seemed to work better. We also used K-14 and K-15 Kwikfish trolling or anchored up which also worked well. We just got some rain which will bring in some more chrome salmon. December is a promising month for catching a salmon. Book early as I still have some openings. Captain Rene'

Current Report: Delta Fall stripers are starting to bite. They're hitting shad and bullheads. It's a light bite, so put in your time and be patient if you want to catch a striper. The in-coming tide has been the best this fall when the tide is very high. When there's an average tide, the bite has been good for both the tops and the bottoms of low and high tides. The trolloing has been off and on, one day good and the next day fair. The best time to troll is at slack tide, but there's always an exception to the rule. We're using deep and shallow diving lures in chartreuse and orange or red and white. Lake
Fishing The trout fishing will be good in all the lakes from now through the winter. You'll want to troll with plastic grubs in white, orange, brown or chartreuse. You can also try the rapelas in fire tiger, rainbow and blue steel. I've had pretty good luck using the fire tiger. When things get tough, go with trolling blades and a nightcrawler, which is always a good stand by. If you're fishing on the bank the best bet is to use power bait and nightcrawlers. I like to use artificial power eggs in pink, white and orange. Keep a tight line!

Current Report: Delta The fall run stripers are here! The temperature is cooling down and the stripers are hammering lures and bait with a fury. The action can be quick and furious when you locate the schools but you have to patiently look for them with persistence till you find them. I have discovered through years of experience in the Delta, that it's critical to fish with the tide in the right location. You should also be selective with the lures you use in various hot spots, temperature, depths, color of the water etc... If the bite slows, try changing color or speed before you move to the next location. But if the bite stops, don't waste time because you want to cover as much water as possible. The bait fishing has been excellent for the schoolies. We've been having a blast catching 12 to 20 a day on shad, sardines, anchovies and shrimp bait. Get your family and friends out there for a great time catching stripers. The sturgeon are jumping but it's difficult to persuede them to take our offerings right now. We've had a few undersize shakers and lost one, however, we anticipate a great season. Book early for the stugeon/stiper trips in the delta. It's going to be a great season! Lakes We're catching trout and kings in the local lakes; Folsom, Comanche, New Melones and my personal favorite, Berryessa. My favorite methods for lake trout, include rolling shad, casting and trolling lake lures as well as trolling blades and nightcrawlers the old traditional way. Some of my favorites lures are homemade from the pink and purple blades and beads found in Mack's accesories. I also like the Shasta pink and silver "Hum Dingers" and the "Wiggle Hoochie" in hot orange and purple. We're having a ball catching the lake trout and kings.

Current Report: Lakes The lakes are abundant with Kokanee! We're fishing Berryessa and New Melones, with Melones the number one choice for the number of fish, however Berryessa is producing larger Kokanee and Kings, the Kokanee are up to 19" and the Kings are up to 22"(3.5 lbs). The fish are going through a transition period now and schooling up. Don't be afraid to change your dogers, lures and scents often when they're not hitting. Once you find the right combination of colors, lures and scents, stick with it till they stop hitting.. then change again. Contrasting colors seem to work well for me. The deeper you go, the darker the color.. and lighter colors closer to the top. (there's always exceptions to the rules). The trout fishing will be turning on soon. I'll update you on the trout at Comanche this fall. Delta/Rivers We're seeing 4 to 6 lb schoolies in the Sacramento River near the Delta. We're using shad and sardines for live bait with good luck as there seems to be an early fall run coming in now that may hold up till December. The deep dive Yo-zuri's have been very productive for me and of course you should have shallow divers as well. The Yo-zuri's shallow divers are always an "Ace in the Hole" for stripers.

Current Report: Delta
We're bait fishing with shad on a balancing beam on the tops and bottoms of the incoming and outgoing tides. We're fishing the Sacramento River from Rio Vista to Collinsville and having alot of success. A good tip for bait fishing is "pay attention!". As the temperature drops and the water becomes colder the fish are lethargic and the bite is very light, so you must really pay attention to feel and see the bite. Also, patience is a virtue.. and be persistant to catch a limit of the best tasting fish on the west coast! For a more aggressive approach, try casting along the shore lines.. three lures that I cast with alot of success are: 1/2 oz. white jig, Fish Trap Swim Bait and a Rattle Trap in various colors. All three of these lures are consistently producing limits! Don't forget about the sturgeon.. We've caught 2 sturgeon this week using shad. I anticipate a banner year for sturgeon!
American/Feather Rivers
The hatchery reports are good for the number of steelhead returning this year so far. Wiggle Warts and Hot Shots are the best lures to use and night crawlers and roe are the best baits. Fish with light lines and gear for the best success.

Current Report: Delta
The sturgeon are on the prowl making their annual journey up river. The prehistorics are hitting on eel, shad, ghost shrimp and grass shrimp. The top of the tides and the bottoms of the tides seem to be the best time of the day to fish. The stripers are back on the bite too! The other day we hooked 22 and had 6 keepers. The bait of choice for the stripers would be shad and ghost shrimp. The water is clearing up now, so trolling and bait fishing both produce fish.
American River
The river is in prime shape for steelhead! We should have good steelhead fishing from now till March. We've caught football size native steelhead and hatchery fish up to 10 lbs. The methods we are using are pulling plugs, wee warts, and hotshots. We are also casting, drifting and boondoggling roe or glowbugs from the hatchery to Howe Avenue. For bait fishing we're using roe or nightcrawlers. Please use caution when you're wading... don't walk through the reds (spawning beds).

Current Report: Delta The striper bass fishing in the Delta is on. We're fishing from Walnut Grove to Collinsville using shallow and deep diving lures depending on the area you are fishing. The best times are the slack tides and the slow moving tides. We're having good luck with Bombers, Rebels and Yozuri's.. It's also, time to anchor up and bait fish too. We're using shad, anchovies and sardines fishing the in-coming and out-going tides. Fish near the deep water channels and the edges of the day markers. You may find yourself catching a lot of little ones, so keep moving to all your favorite spots till you find the big ones. Lake Fishing The lakes are turning over, meaning the water from the bottom is transitioning to the top which makes the fishing better. We will be trout fishing at Folsom, Berryessa and the Motherlode lakes. We will be using Uncle Larry's lures, Rocky Mountain Tackle, and Mack's Lures. You'll want to fish the surface to 35 feet and remember the fish like to stay near structures, drop offs and ledges. We're looking forward to a great year of lake fishing, maybe better than last year. Last year we caught big numbers of trout, kings, kokanees, browns and mac's. Keep a tight line, hope to see you on the water!

Current Report: Berryessa Lake The fishing at Berryessa has been great! We're catching land locked kings, kokanee, trout and we even managed to catch a wayward black bass. For the kings, we're trolling "Mooselook" electric blues and rainbow patterns, as well as dodgers (3/0 or 2/0) in chrome, pink, yellow and gold and rolling shad with pro-cure scents. The fish are fat and ranging from 14 to 18 inches and growing. We're catching Kokanee using Uncle Larry's spinners in pink fire tiger, pink and blue color combinations and copper pop as well as wedding rings in orange, pink and red colors, tipping the hooks with Pautzke corn in reds, yellows and blues, give it a try, it's new and works well. For trout, we're trolling small and medium size Mooselook Wobblers, Bully's and Trout-Truite's and Uncle Larry's silver blade spinners with a nightcrawler. For all the species, we're fishing in about 80 feet of water and finding the fish at about 25 to 60 feet. Delta Striper fishing has been the best I've seen in years! We're trolling in 10 feet of water at 3 to 5 mph using Yo-zuri minnow plugs in silver/red, clown color, silver/blue and a white trick worm smeared with pro-cure. From the Isleton Bridge to the Rio Vista Bridge seems to be the most productive area.

The larger females are just starting to arrive. We're trolling, casting lures and bait fishing.... everything works! We're also catching some spring sturgeon.. we released a 71" and two under size sturgeon this week. We're catching the sturgeon on the outgoing tide using ghost shrimp. Now's the time to book for spring run stripers/sturgeon.
