2004 FISHING REPORT

Date: Sunday, December 19, 2004 at 09:09:28
Current Report:

We hooked and released a keeper sized sturgeon on Saturday (12/18) and saw two more caught. We also hooked eight keeper sized stripers up to 8 lbs. The bottom of the incoming tide through the end of the outgoing tide was the best bite. The bait of choice is shad and ghost shrimp. We fished from Chain Island to Decker Island. Right now is the time to fish for the larger stripers and sturgeon. Call us to book your trips, we're booking seven days a week.

American/Feather Rivers

Don't forget the openers... The rivers have been closed since October and will re-open for salmon and steelhead on January 1, 2005. We'll be fishing using the traditional baits such as nightcrawlers, roe and lures. Book early for the best dates.

Current Report:

Delta

We're fishing for stripers on the Sacramento River from the Iselton Bridge to Sherman Lake and on the San Joaquin River, we're fishing from the Antioch Bridge to Discovery Bay. We're using patriot rebels (red, white & blue) or bait such as shad and sardines. The best time to fish is an hour before the incoming tide, or an hour before the outgoing tide.. usually in about 15' to 17' of water. The sturgeon fishing is starting to pick up, so book your trips early for the best dates.

American River

We're driftboat fishing for salmon and steelhead in the American River from the powerlines to the mouth (Discovery Park). For steelhead we're using silver/blue or silver/orange wiggleworts or nightcrawlers or roe. For salmon, we're using flatfish with a sardine wrap. We've started booking drift trips for December, January and February for the upcoming steelhead run as I anticipate another banner year for steelhead.

Feather River

We're fishing for steelhead and salmon from the afterbay to the Gridley Bridge in the jetboat. We're using wigglewarts in silver/blue or orange for the steelhead, or nightcrawlers and roe. For salmon we're using flatfish with a sardine wrap. Now's the time to book for the steelhead run.

Current Report:

Sacramento River

The late fall, king salmon run is here! From the mouth of the Feather River to Viera's in the Delta! We're catching them on spinners and flatfish on the tops and bottoms of the incoming and outgoing tides. They're weighing in at from 8 to 10 lbs for the jacks and the kings are from 16 to 40 lbs. They're fresh right out of the ocean with sea lice on them! The salmon run has been good this season from the upper Sacramento near Corning to the Delta. We've been averaging a fish per rod, or better since July 15th. The stripers and sturgeon are starting to feed in the Delta and can can catch them trolling and bait fishing. We will be booking trips for striper and sturgeon fishing starting in November (or maybe sooner) through the end of May or June, or until next years salmon arrive.

Feather & American Rivers

The steelhead runs should be arriving at the end of the month and be here through April. They usually hit lures and bait. Book your trips early for the best dates.

Current Report:

Sacramento River

We're fishing up by Woodson Bridge, drifting about ten miles of the upper Sacramento River and it's beautiful up here! The run is just starting and were getting one to three salmon per outing. We've caught smaller jack salmon up to about six pounds and the big kings up to 31 lbs.... and a 39 pound salmon was weighed in at Woodson Bridge this week. We're also catching steelhead up to 8 lbs. Boon-doggin' and backbouncing roe seems to be the best method to catch these fish. All the fish caught are chrome domes!! The water temperature is about 59 degrees which is iedal for the salmon. This is the beginning of the run and the fish are stong so we've lost a few of the hook-ups.. so be careful and gentle when reeling them in using 20 lb test. If your planning to book a trip, there's a guide special going on at nearby Rolling Hills Casino.. you get a room for the night, breakfast, a box lunch (for your fishing outing) and dinner when you return... all for $40.00... this is a guide package, so give me a call if you'd like to book a trip and stay at the Casino. I look forward to fishing with you!

Current Report:

Woodson Bridge/Upper Sacramento River

We are booking for salmon/steelhead and trout in the Woodson Bridge area through the end of September. The run starts in August and continues through January. We use flatfish with a sardine wrap, backbounce roe and boondog with roe for salmon. For the steelhead/trout, we use roe, nightcrawlers and lures. The salmon season is coming on slow, but I anticipate a super run by mid August. My captain freinds fishing the ocean have spotted a five mile run of salmon just waiting to enter the rivers. The fish are chrome bright and fish up to 36 lbs have been caught already! Book early for the best dates!

Feather River

Feather River fishing has been quite a challange due to the pressure of the multitude of jet boats and bankers. We're using flatfish with a sardine wrap in the morning and switch to roe in the afternoon. We work the river from the Afterbay down to Gridley. The fish are up to 25 lbs and chrome domes.

Delta

Stripers, Stripers, Stripers!! Once we locate the schools, we've got non-stop action from the time we get there till it's time to go home. They're running from schoolie size to about 22 lbs. The larger females are just starting to arrive. We're trolling, casting lures and bait fishing.... everything works! We're also catching some spring sturgeon.. we released a 71" and two under size sturgeon this week. We're catching the sturgeon on the outgoing tide using ghost shrimp. Now's the time to book for spring run stripers/sturgeon.

American & Feather Rivers

We anticipate a good shad run this year. The shad usually start to arrive around the end of April or early May. If you've never caught one of these minnie tarpins you're in for a surprise. Pound for pound they will put up a hard fight! They are alot of fun to catch using light tackle or a fly rod. Book early for the best dates.

Delta

The spring striper run is on it's way. The rivers are up the stripers and sturgeon are here. The stripers are starting out biting on bait such as sardines, anchovies, pile worms, mudsuckers, bullheads and live minnows. For sturgeon use mud shrimp, grass shrimp, ghost shrimp and pileworms. Due to the high waters you don't necessarily need to be out in the middle of the river. You can fish near the bank with good results. Look for humps, ledges and dropoffs and keep your bait on the bottom by having adequate weight to keep it in the strike zone (at least 4 to 12 oz of weight). As the water recedes and clears to a nice green color, the fishing should improve for trolling. When you start trolling, use your bombers, rebels and bucktail jigs.

American River

The river is full of steelies from the hatchery all the way to Howe Avenue. We've been drifting and anchoring using nightcrawlers, roe and plugs and catching fish from 2 to 8 lbs. Please be careful while fishing on the riffles, if you walk on the reds you will spook the fish in their spawning beds.

Lakes

All the lake levels are coming up. We should have a very good trout and kokanee year. Pardee and Amador have started out with a bang! Use power bait and nightcrawlers. For trolling we use Williams lures; Mooselook, Bully and Thin Fish lures near the surface (zero to 8 feet). We are looking forward to fishing the Mother Lode lakes!
