2005 FISHING REPORT

Date: Monday, August 8, 2005 at 07:18:47
Current Report:

Sacramento River/Woodson Bridge

The salmon run is just starting now. We've caught salmon to 25 pounds using flatfish with a sardine wrap. The water flows are running above average this year with good color and the temperature is a cool 57 degrees making this excellent fishing conditions. Pound for pound, these salmon are are the best fighting fish in the west! This season we have a great "sportsmans" package... don't forget to ask about it when you book.. I'm looking forward to fishing with you! Book early for the best dates.

Sacramento/American Rivers

The salmon are passing through the mouth of the American River. We caught three so far this season, ranging from 18 to 22 pounds. We were using spinners and flatfish. As the season progresses, and the salmon run will continue building as they journey up the American River. The run was late last year, so we're anticipating another late run from now until December. Book early for the best dates.

Current Report:

Sacramento River, Woodson Bridge

July 16th is opening day. We'll be booking trips through the end of September. Looks like it's going to be the best in years for water flow and the counts are expected to be very good this year. As I write this, Shasta Lake is at full capacity and the flows are running twice as much as they were last year at this time. We'll be boon doggling and back trolling. I'll be staying at the Woodson Bridge RV Park and will be fishing every day. If you haven't experienced this part of the river, I hope you can make it this year. Besides the great fishing, you can catch sight of some of natures most beautiful specticals, including the river otters, bald eagles and osprey... I've even seen a few wild turkeys! It's a lot of fun.

Feather River

The flows are up and the water temperature has dropped a degree or two and is a nice green color. I've landed a couple of beautiful hens and lost a hog!! But got some fresh roe to cure... We're using flatfish with a sardine wrap and throwing spinners in the morning and midday/afternoon we're backbouncing roe. Salmon season fills up fast, so book early for the best dates. Current Report:

Delta

The spring release has brought he stripers in. Striper fishing is better with bait than with trolling lures. The best method is using shad or sardines anchored up in 12 to 30 feet of water. You can use a balancing beam or hold it in your hand to detect the strike. Trolling will be more effective as the water receeds. We have been having good results using rebels and bombers. It's been a very good striper season so far and it should stay good until the end of June/July. Don't forget July 16th is the salmon opener. We've already started booking for salmon.

Lakes

Fishing has been very good for trout and kokanee. The best fishing depth would be from the surface to 55 feet using lures, bait and down riggers for those of you that use them to get down deep. Fishing early and late in the day is best. Good lures to use is Mack's lures, wedding rings, and Williams lures. They all work great for trout and kokanee. Bank fishing is good with power bait and night crawlers fishing off the points and deep holes.

Feather River/American River

The salmon are coming into the Feather River as we speak. I released one salmon already in the Sacramento River. We will be booking trips in June, July and August. The cottonwood trees are doing their thing.. when the cotton fluffs are floating in the breeze, this is a good indication that the shad are here. We are using fly rods and spinning gear, and flies and jigs. Book early for the best dates.

Delta

Good ol' Mother Nature has supplied us with plenty of water! As we speak, the striper run is looking like it will be one of the best it's been in years! There's been a lot of schoolies caught and some big adults up to 50 lbs! We're trolling for stripers in our favorite spots from the Delta to the mouth of the Feather River, using rebels, bombers and jigs to bag our limits. We're also bait fishing with shad, sardines and anchovies. The sturgeon are lagging a little, but don't give up on them! The sturgeon bite is picking up and should be fair to good in the coming weeks. Bait of choice for sturgeon is eel, grass & ghost shrimp and salmon roe. Fish the tops and bottoms of the tides for best results. Get out there and enjoy the beautiful spring weather with your friends and family. Don't be left out! Book early for the best dates.

Delta

The sturgeon are on the prowl making their annual run. As they inhale your offering, you may not feel a thing. The bite is so subtle that you might miss the take down if you are not watchful and ready. It takes alot of perserverence and patience to get one. The bait of choice is eel, ghost, grass, mud shrimp and salmon roe. The right time to fish for sturgeon and striped bass is important... fish at the top and the bottom of the tides for best results. The spring has sprung and the striped bass are here too! They have been feeding on shad in the same locations as the sturgeon. The water is muddy now, but as soon as it clears to about 2 foot visability we'll be back on the troll. For the stipers, we'll be using bombers, rebels and jigs. I will be field testing some new products, a lure called the "Sledge Hammer" by Mackey's and some fishing spoons by Williams. Check my next report for the results of these tests.

American River

The steelhead season is peaking. There's still time to catch some steelhead as we speak. The river has dropped to 2,800 cfs, it's green in color and in prime shape. We anticipate a good spring run in March and April. The bait of choice is nightcrawlers and roe and the best lures to use are Hot Shots and Wiggle Warts. Enjoy the nice spring weather catch some fish! Captain Rene'

Current Report:

Delta

The sturgeon are on the prowl making their annual journey up river. The prehistorics are hitting on eel, shad, ghost shrimp and grass shrimp. The top of the tides and the bottoms of the tides seem to be the best time of the day to fish. The stripers are back on the bite too! The other day we hooked 22 and had 6 keepers. The bait of choice for the stripers would be shad and ghost shrimp. The water is clearing up now, so trolling and bait fishing both produce fish.

American River

The river is in prime shape for steelhead! We should have good steelhead fishing from now till March. We've caught football size native steelhead and hatchery fish up to 10 lbs. The methods we are using are pulling plugs, wee warts, and hotshots. We are also casting, drifting and boondoggling roe or glowbugs from the hatchery to Howe Avenue. For bait fishing we're using roe or nightcrawlers. Please use caution when you're wading... don't walk through the reds (spawning beds).
