2006 FISHING REPORT

Date: Friday, December 8, 2006 at 08:19:26
Current Report:

Delta

We're bait fishing with shad on a balancing beam on the tops and bottoms of the incoming and outgoing tides. We're fishing the Sacramento River from Rio Vista to Collinsville and having alot of success. A good tip for bait fishing is "pay attention!". As the temperature drops and the water becomes colder the fish are lethargic and the bite is very light, so you must really pay attention to feel and see the bite. Also, patience is a virtue.. and be persistant to catch a limit of the best tasting fish on the west coast! For a more aggressive approach, try casting along the shore lines.. three lures that I cast with alot of success are: 1/2 oz. white jig, Fish Trap Swim Bait and a Rattle Trap in various colors. All three of these lures are consistently producing limits! Don't forget about the sturgeon.. We've caught 2 sturgeon this week using shad. I anticipate a banner year for sturgeon!

American/Feather Rivers

The hatchery reports are good for the number of steelhead returning this year so far. Wiggle Warts and Hot Shots are the best lures to use and night crawlers and roe are the best baits. Fish with light lines and gear for the best success.

The stripers are on a good bite whether you bait fish or trolling. You will have good luck at both the tops and bottoms of the tides. Use fresh shad for bait fishing and troll bombers and rebels. The salmon are also making their fall run. You should have luck trolling with silvertron spinners and/or flatfish or you can anchor up with flatfish.

Sacramento/American River

The salmon fishing got off to a late start this summer and it looks like the fall run will be late as well. It's good some days and spotty on other days. The fall run is anticipated to be good according to the experts. So as soon as the salmon are here in full swing we'll be catching more of them in the lower rivers. For salmon, we will be trolling silvertron spinners and willow leaf blades or anchoring up with a flatfish.

Current Report:

Sacramento River/Woodson Bridge

The season is just starting and it's looking good! A 46 pound salmon was caught yesterday and numerous fish in the 18 to 28 lb range. About half were caught on bait and the other half on flatfish with a sardine wrap. So, if you've got some roe and/or flatfish, you can catch fish! We're having lots of fun, but please be careful, the river has changed with debri and alot of new snags since last year. If you want to book a trip with me, I will supply all the bait, tackle and equipment you need for a fun day of fishing. I can instruct beginners and seasoned anglers as well as new jet boat owners who want to learn the river. All you need is lunch and a California fishing license with an enhancement stamp. You can call me on my cell phone at (916) 825-8341 if you want to book a trip. I'll be staying at Woodson Bridge through the end of the season. I look forward to fishing with you!

Lake Berryessa

The fishing's been great at Berryessa! Our last three trips produced limits of trout, King Salmon and Kokanee. We're fishing the main body around the big island. The most productive methods were trolling spinners, frozen shad and grubs in about 30 to 40 feet of water.

Woodson Bridge

Fishing is good at Woodson Brige and we anticipate a great salmon season. Book early for the best dates.

Current Report:

Sacramento River and Delta

The rivers are swolen from high flows and spring runoff which is bringing up fresh stripers and sturgeon. You'll just have to change your techniques of fishing for the high water. The high water is causing the fish to be closer to the banks and ledges. We're using pileworms, sardines and shad. With the high water they're hitting very lightly at times and other times striking it vigorously! So you need to pay attention and don't leave your pole unattended. Trolling can at times be fair to good or may be excellent depending on the tide and the color of the water. The best time to troll is the in coming tide in about 6 to 8 feet of water close to the bank using bright florescent colors. Troll at a fast clip and have plenty of lures because you're going to lose a few.

Shasta Lake

We'll be fishing Shasta Lake for salmon and trout starting the end of April and the first part of May. The reports are excellent for kings, rainbows and browns. I'm looking forward to fishing up there it will be a fun experience! Book now if you're interested in heading up that direcetion as I'll be there through the first week in May.

Current Report:

Delta

After the recent rains the sturgeon action has started as the water receded. The baits of choice are mud, ghost and grass shrimp, pile worms and eel. We're fishing at the top of the high tides and and bottoms of the low tides. Now's the time to fish for sturgeon while you can. Department of Fish & Game may put a stop to sturgeon fishing in our area from Rio Vista up... The striped bass action will improve as the clarity improves. The best baits to use are shad, pile worms and the shrimp baits. As the water clarity improves, so will the trolling. The lure of choice for trolling would be bombers and rebels. Casting for the stripers will be effective along the tule lines and old pilings using lures and jigs. Now's the time to book for spring fishing.

American River

The steelhead are in the river now for their annual winter/spring run. We're drifting the river from the hatchery to Howe Avenue. The best offerings are roe and nightcrawlers for bait and the best lures to use are glow bugs, wiggle warts and hot shots.
