2007 FISHING REPORT

Date: Sunday, December 23, 2007 at 09:26:46
Current Report:

Delta

The winter bite is on and the fish bite very lightly. You have to pay attention to your fishing pole or you might miss the bite. We are having good luck using shad anchovie sardines. The fish are being caught between the high and low tides. For a more aggressive strike, try trolling at the slack tide with shallow and deep diving lures and/or casting swim baits and rattle-trap lures by the tules... and hang on to your pole because they strike viciously! There's a lot of water to cover, so once you locate them, stay with them.

Lake Fishing

Mother Nature has blessed us with fresh water and is now beginning to fill our reservoirs. The trout fishing will be productive on the surface to about 10 feet of water. Troll top water lures in the morning and during the mid day you can use a flasher/lure combo or a flasher/bait combo with good results. If you're fishing from the shore, use power bait, night crawlers or flies. Casting Spinners and/or Castmasters will also be productive.

American River

The season opens on January 1st for steelhead. We'll be drifing roe, nighcrawlers and glowbugs. We're looking forward to a good steelhead season. Book early for the best days.

Delta

We're doing combo trips in the Delta for Salmon and Stripers. The salmon are getting a late start this year and are at least a month behind schedule. There have been a few caught, so we fish half a day for salmon using spinners and flatfish trolling at about 1 1/2 MPH downstream. For stripers we are trolling about 3 to 5 MPH upstream and downstream with the tide using bombers and rebels with a 10" trickworm with the Captain's procure secret scent. To bait fish for stripers, we're using shad and ghost shrimp also with the Captains secret sauce and fish the high and low tides. The best bite seems to be the bottom of the outgoing tide.

Feather River

The Feather River run has started. We'll be concentrating on the lower Feather from Verona to the Hwy 99 Bridge. We'll be trolling with spinners and flatfish at the same holes where I caught fish in previous years using the traditional methods. This is jetboat water so be cautious traveling up river. Keep a tight line, I'll see you on the river.

Delta

The schoolie stripers are in the Delta right now. We're catching schoolies up to 10 lbs trolling with rebels and bombers from Walnut Grove to Collinsville. For bait fishing, we're using anchovies, sardines and shad. It seems that the best time to fish is two hours before the high tide and two hours after the low tide. It's been a good summer for the schoolie stripers so far and the big stripers shoould be here in the fall. The salmon haven't arrived yet due to the water temperature, however they should be here around October to mid October. So you'll want to book early for the best dates for the fall stripers.

Sacramento River/Woodson Bridge

I'm booking trips on the Sacramento River for the trophy Kings starting around mid September. We will be using Kwik-Fish with a sardine wrap, and drifting with Alaskan king salmon roe. Right now there's plenty of salmon up there and they're averaging 1 to 2 salmon per boat. The run will be building up within the next two or three weeks. Should be good! I'll be at the Woodson Bridge RV Park if you want to get a hold of me. You can call me on my cell phone at (916) 825-8341. I look forward to fishing with you!

We're catching stripers trolling with rebels and bombers and bait fishing with shad and sardines. Catfish are on the prowl too, we caught quite a few of them last week on clams and anchovies. You might get lucky and get a sturgeon using any of the shrimp baits. We're still waiting for the salmon to show up and we'll be trolling for salmon as soon as they arrive. Book early for the best dates.

Feather and American Rivers

There are stripers being caught in both rivers using jumbo minnows and sardines. There's some early arrival salmon in the river now, start early and be patient and you'll catch your fish. Try using a quik fish with a sardine wrap, a spinner or a Magnum wiggle wart for your best bet on lures, but the Salmon are hitting roe too! I recently got back from Alaska and brought lot's of roe back with me. So if you've got some fresh roe, you'll have a better chance of getting a salmon.

Sacramento River/Woodson Bridge

There's fresh run salmon in the Sacramento River now and we are looking forward to a banner year. The bait of choice would be salmon roe and the best lures to use would be quik fish (16) with a sardine wrap. We're booking salmon trips now. Keep a tight line! Captain Rene'

We're on the winter bite now. Pay attention to your fishing line! Put your rod on a balancing beam and set the hook at every strike.. don't hesitate. Don't be afraid to change your location to find the biting stripers. Be sure to use fresh shad and ghost shrimp to catch your stripers and sturgeon. For lure fishing you'll want to use swim bait and 1/2 oz white jig. In deeper water we'll be spooning for our stripers from Rio Vista to Collinsville on the Sacramento. On the San Joaquin side we're fishing from Mildred Island to the PG&E plant in Antioch.

American River

As we speak, the American is low and clear, and when we get some rain the fishing will be better. Right now it's slow to fair with fish from 10 to 16 lbs from the hatchery to Rossmoor bar, however there are fish being caught all the way down to Howe Avenue. As you know, you've got to put in your time in to catch a steelhead... remember, patience is a virtue. We're doing the rain dance and hoping for the best. Once we get a good rain the fishing will really pick up. Pound for pound steelhead are the most hard fighting fish in the west and are really worth the time and effort. Recently, I was at the San Mateo and Sacramento Sportsman's shows and enjoyed talking with you, thanks for coming by.

Alaska

I will be guiding out of the Kokwok Lodge (www.Kokwoklodge.com)in Alaska this summer from June through the end of August and still have a few openings. The lodge is out of Dillingham on the awesome Nushagak River where you will experience some of the best fishing in the world! The best time to fish is June 15 through July 15.. we're expecting over 200 thousand fish for this run! The River will be closed for kings on July 24.. so book early for the best dates. Prime time fishing for silver/kohos will be late July through early September. We fish for rainbows all year long. The rainbows run from 3 to 10 lbs. We're looking forward to a banner year!
